🐻 The Official Daily Newsletter For Baylor Athletics

Good Morning Bears. Being a Bear is far more than just what happens on the field of play.

While each student-athlete is in Waco, our commitment is far more focused on them as people than athletes. We want our Bears to be champions for life, not just their sport.

Many times, that calls us to bring in unique ways to push them outside of their comfort zone. It’s something our women’s basketball team got a full taste of this past weekend.

You don’t want to miss the details on this one, and we’ve got much more for you as we continue to prepare for 3️⃣ home games this week!

We’ve got all the details and more in today’s Brew.

🔺 At Attention. Very few can find better leadership than in our servicemen and women.

No better group to call upon when trying to bring out the best in us, right? That’s what the Baylor women’s basketball program did this past weekend spending the weekend with members of the U.S. Marine Corps on campus for a special Marine Leadership Training event.

The multi-day event started with dinner and introductions Friday evening and went through Sunday morning as the group debriefed with the Marine staff and enjoyed breakfast as a team.

"I'm grateful to have had an opportunity to be a part of such an amazing weekend with people who all share a common goal with one another," senior Aijha Blackwell said. "The leadership training was everything for me and helped me learn the true tools on what it will take to win championships. I learned a lot and truly believe my personal leadership skills have already grown so much after the experience. My teammates and I learned a lot from one another which will be vital to our success this season."

🔺 Holding Court. It’s tough to find a better place to play some tennis than the Hurd Tennis Center.

Baylor women’s tennis team enjoys it so much that three of the five fall matches will be played right here at home as Coach Scrivano announced the program’s 2023 fall slate.

The four fall tournaments will lead up to Big 12 Individual Championships, hosted in Waco from Nov. 10-13.

🔺 Person > Player. Baylor has long been about developing the person far more than the athlete.

Each month, the Student-Athlete Center for Excellence recognizes just that with the SACE Monthly Champions Awards.

In the month of August, Devonte Tezino (football), De'montray Callis (men's track & field), Mariah Polk (acrobatics & tumbling) and Riley Simpson (volleyball) have been selected as the honorees.

This award recognizes student-athletes who achieve their personal bests in the areas of academic achievement, athletic success, character formation and spiritual growth.

Each of these student-athletes was nominated by a SACE team member based upon their embodiment of each of the four pillars.
