📝 MAKING A LIST…
No, Santa Claus isn’t making this list. This time it’s the Maxwell Football Club.
On that list is Baylor’s sixth-year senior QB Dequan Finn.
Finn is one of 80 candidates named to the award's preseason watch list, which is presented annually to the most outstanding player in college football.
The 2023 MAC Most Valuable Player, Finn led the league in passing efficiency (151.04), yards (2,657), touchdown passes (22) and total offense (247.7) a year ago. His 563 rushing yards were the most among MAC quarterbacks, as his dual-threat abilities landed him MAC West Offensive Player of the Week honors three times. He also earned his second-career all-conference accolade in 2023 and first as a first-team selection.
A native of Detroit, Finn comes to Baylor having played in 45 games over his collegiate career, including 32 starts. He has racked up 7,074 yards and 63 passing touchdowns, while rushing for another 1,840 yards in his career on 389 carries with 25 TDs. This is the third-straight season in which Finn has been named to the Maxwell Award's preseason watch list.
🐻 PASSPORT TO PARIS
Three more Bears made their 2024 Olympic debuts on Monday with Britney Griner, Kristy Wallace and Avery Skinner all getting into the action.
Griner had 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists in Team USA’s opening win over Japan. Skinner provided a monster spark for Team USA with 15 kills and two aces, but the Americans dropped a tough five-set match to China. Lastly, Wallace had two points and an assist off the bench for Australia in their Olympics opener.
This morning, John Peers hits the courts in Round 2 of the doubles competition.
🎙 SIC ’EM POD: RICKY THOMPSON
On this week’s episode, we’re catching up with legendary Baylor
wide receiver and long jump champion Ricky Thompson.
During his time in Waco, Thompson became a 2-sport letter winner, and
was a part of the 1974 “Miracle on the Brazos” Baylor football team.
Now, after a 7-year NFL career, Thompson is entering year 24
as Baylor football’s sideline reporter.
👏 NO ADJUSTMENT NEEDED
Most incoming college students need time to adjust to a new environment and the academics rigors of a school like Baylor.
For 62 Baylor student-athletes, that adjustment wasn’t too shabby as they were recognized as part of the 2023-24 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team last week.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services, student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team must be new, first-time/incoming freshmen that have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial coursework and achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00.
Additionally, the student-athlete must have participated in at least one of their team's scheduled contests and must have been a member of their respective team for their sport's entire NCAA Championship segment. The Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team was introduced in the 2012-13 academic year.
🎟 YOU PICK IT!
This week, Baylor Athletics unveiled a new Mini Plan option for the upcoming 2024 Football season.
The new “You Pick It” mini plan offers flexibility and allows fans to build their own mini-plan from three tiers of options to enjoy McLane Stadium this fall.
The Baylor Family can purchase the You Pick It mini plan for $225. Each plan includes the Bears' Homecoming Game on Oct. 26 against Oklahoma State and from there fans can build their plan based on their schedule for the remaining two games.
🏈 COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: 32 DAYS
Number of the Day: 32
On the third play of a second quarter drive of the season opener in 2023, newcomer Dominic Richardson scampered 32 yards to help set up a Baylor TD.
That run was the longest of the year by a Bear as Richardson finished as the team leader in rushing yards (519) and carries (125). He also had 21 passes for 152 yards in his first season in Waco.

🤔 SIC ’EM TRIVIA
This week, Baylor soccer returns to the pitch as the Bears are just 16 days away from the start of their 2024 season.
In just two years, Ashley Merrill has scored 16 goals, including a team-leading 12 last fall.
Those 12 goals were the most by a Bear in a single-season since 2012. Which Bear was the last to score 12+ goals in a season?
