🎙 INSIDE BAYLOR SPORTS

Feb. 26th Edition:
A Wild, Wild Weekend

What a wild weekend it was in Baylor Athletics as 9 different sport
programs competed! We had come from behind wins, an overtime finish,
last second free throws for the win and a whole lot more.

We will recap it all plus look ahead to tonight’s men’s basketball
game at TCU on Big Monday.

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 Country Road Ws. We might need to check Jana Van Gytenbeek’s veins for ice water.

The senior guard subbed in for Jada Walker who was injured with 4.3 seconds left and calmly drained two free throws in front of the raucous WVU Coliseum crowd to lift #24 Baylor to a thrilling 66-65 victory over #22 West Virginia on Saturday afternoon.

After losing a double-digit lead and falling behind, 65-64, on a 3-pointer by JJ Quinerly, the Bears threw it away with 7.9 seconds left. But West Virginia returned the favor when JJ Quinerly lost control of the inbounds pass in the backcourt and was forced to foul Walker on a layup attempt, which set up Jana’s FTs.

Yet again, the offensive attack was balanced with Sarah Andrews posting a team-high 14, while Darianna Littlepage-Buggs added 11 points and nine rebounds. BU got 10 points apiece from Van Gytenbeek, Aijha Blackwell and Bella Fontleroy.

🔺 California Dreamin. If there were any fingernails left after Thursday’s one-run wins over #25 Oregon and Notre Dame, they surely weren’t left after the weekend for BU softball fans.

Folks, watch out because these Bears are heating up. BU swept through the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif with not one, not two, but 3️⃣ wins over ranked opponents and two walk-off wins.

In the circle, the Bears have been phenomenal, allowing three or fewer earned runs in six of the past seven games, while the offense pounded out 50 hits in the five game sweep in California.

🔺 Duck Hunting. And the streak lives on…

With the top two teams in the country taking the mat, all eyes were on Waco on Sunday and the top-ranked BU Acrobatics & Tumbling squad delivered once again, defeating the #2-ranked Ducks of Oregon, 278.935 to 271.835.

The win increases BU’s winning streak to 30, dating back to March of 2021.

🎥 BAYLOR+: SIC ‘EM POD WITH AIJHA

And who delivered the game-clinching block on Saturday? Of course, it was Aijha Blackwell.

From the time she was 8 years old, to her final season of college basketball, she has carried her family’s legacy and Saturday was no different.

From the time she first stepped on a basketball court, she has dominated the glass. Now in her senior season, she is looking forward to playing in her first NCAA Tournament and achieving more than she ever has.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Six.

Saturday’s win is the sixth over a top-25 opponent this year for BU, ranking tops in that category for any Big 12 squad.

The six ranked wins also tie BU with UConn, NC State, South Carolina and UCLA for the most in the country.
