Does that get the juice flowing?

🔺 Young and Hungry. It’s never easy to replace veteran leadership. But, in the first couple days of practice, Baylor head coach Ryan McGuyre loves what he sees from his Bears volleyball squad.

This fall, Baylor will have zero seniors on the roster that includes six freshmen, but what they lack in experience, they make up for with energy and desire.

In the latest edition of View From the Hill, we get a look into what will surely be another exciting year on the court for the Green and Gold.

🔺 Court Is In Session. Our BU women’s hoops team continued their foreign tour, this time taking the court in Greece against a team from the University of Regina (Canada) for its final game of the trip.

The Bears continued to display toughness and athleticism and we’re excited to see what the season brings.

One of the best parts of the game? Coach Collen got to coach in the same gym where she played professionally in Greece in the 90s.

Also… it was the same gym that some guy named Giannis Antetokounmpo played in growing up, apparently he’s pretty good at basketball or something.

Our men’s team had a strong showing in their first exhibition game earlier this week and will take the court for the final contest of the trip on Sunday when they take on the South France Select team.

Follow along with @BaylorMBB for all the live coverage and tune in to Monday’s Brew to get a recap.

🔺 Clean Sheet. Next Thursday can’t get here soon enough.

Ashley Merrill continued her strong preseason showing with two more goals, while Micah Beasley and Jenna Patterson each chipped in a goal apiece. Hannah Augustyn and Theresa McCullough both had an assist in the contest.

Ashlee Zirkel and Makinzie Short split time in goal for the combined shutout.

🔺 Going Global. Our BU hoops teams aren’t the only ones going global as the Bears men’s golf program added its first international recruit of head coach Mike McGraw’s tenure.

He is currently ranked 114th in the Rolex AJGA Rankings, highlighted by a tie for second at the K.J. Choi Foundation in March.

Gonzalez joins Davis Ovard, who signed last November, on a team that returns every player that competed in 2022-23 en route to a trip to the NCAA Championship.

🔺 It’s All Coming Together. This week, the Bears strapped on the pads and kicked up training camp another notch as the season is three weeks away.

One of the group that feels it the most when the pads come on is the offensive line, a unit that the Bears seeing continuing to come together with new faces becoming a cohesive unit.

A View From The Hill takes an in-depth look at a unit that could be a critical part of the team’s success this fall.

🔺 And Another One. Richard Reese’s football resume is well onto its second page at this point.

He is one of 75 candidates named to the award's watch list, which is presented annually to the nation's top college running back.

Already a preseason all-conference honoree and Maxwell Award Watch List member, Reese was tabbed a Freshman All-American in 2022 after shattering Baylor's rookie rushing record with 972 yards on 198 carries. He added 14 touchdowns, which ranked fourth-best in BU single-season history, and finished just 28 yards shy of becoming the 16th 1,000-yard rusher in program history.

🏈 COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: 22 DAYS

We always love seeing a local kid join the Green and Gold.

That’s what we have in #22 Reggie Bush, a redshirt freshman this upcoming fall, who adds valuable depth and athleticism to the Bears defensive secondary unit.

Last season, Bush saw time in two games before redshirting, but brings a plethora of athleticism as he played three different positions at Frisco Independence, earning him District Utility Player of the Year honors as a senior.

In addition to his accomplishments on the gridiron, Bush also was a part of the school’s track and soccer teams as well.

⏱ BEAR (COUNT)DOWN

SIX DAYS! That’s right folks.

We are less than ONE WEEK away from the start of the 2023-2024 Baylor athletic calendar. The Baylor soccer squad kicks things off (literally) when they travel to Oregon to take on the Ducks, next Thursday, August 17th at 9 pm CST.

Two weeks later, the soccer, volleyball, cross country and football teams are ALL in action. Block off that weekend and make sure you’ve got the Green and Gold ready!

The Bears are coming.

🤔 SIC ’EM TRIVIA

On the Cusp. As we mentioned earlier, Richard Reese’s football resume is already quite lengthy and he’s not even started his second collegiate season yet.

One thing that Reese is hoping to add to it this fall is becoming the program’s 16th 1,000-yard rusher, a mark he was just 28 yards short of last fall.

Can you name the program’s first-ever 1,000-yard rusher and the year?

Think you got it?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Steve Beaird in 1974.

In 1974, Beaird carried the ball 267 times for 1,104 yards and 13 rushing TDs.

Beaird helped the Bears win the final five games in 1974 and earn a berth in the Cotton Bowl to take on the Nittany Lions of Penn State, along with a top-15 national ranking.
