Baylor Brew 9/6: Mustang Meetings

Volleyball, Soccer Take On SMU

🐻 The Official Daily Newsletter For Baylor Athletics

Good Morning Baylor Fam. So a Mustang and a Bear walk into a gym…

And the next night, they meet up again at the field.

No punchline to this, but it’s the next few nights for the Green & Gold as both the volleyball and soccer squads will face-off against in-state rival SMU on back-to-back nights.

Let’s be honest, you weren’t going to get much done work wise this week anywhere, you could head up to Dallas tonight and be back in Waco tomorrow…. just sayin’

What do we have stirrin’ in today’s Brew? Check it out!

🎥 BAYLOR+

Inside Baylor Sports is the official daily podcast of Baylor Athletics. Hosted by Justin Hoff and a rotating cast of insiders like Jerry Hill and former student-athletes like Elliot Coffey, this is the one-stop shop for everything fans need to know about the Bears: the biggest stories, exclusive interviews and opinions on the most important news of the day.

Every episode will be ready and waiting for fans first thing each morning.

Today’s episode: Justin and Jerry look ahead to a busy week on campus with plenty of action coming your way.

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 Queen Of The Block. She’s only three games into her BU career, but Manuela Bibinbe is already the “Queen of the Block”.

In last week’s home-opening win over #18 Rice, Bibinbe paced the Bears with seven blocks on the night, including four solo, to hold the Owls to just a .007 hitting percentage.

Her seven blocks led a team effort as BU raked in 15 total in the win.

This is Bibinbe's first conference honor from the Big 12 and Baylor's first weekly honor of the 2023 season.

🔺 Home Sweet Home. After being on the road for four of the five games of the season, the Baylor futbol squad is ready to be back at Sweet Betty Lou Mays Stadium.

The Bears are off to their best start since 2019 and have posted three shutouts in the first five games of the year.

Six different players have scored this season as Baylor has used a balanced offensive attack and a stifling defensive effort to pile up a 3-1-1 ledger.

BU hosts SMU on Thursday night at Betty Lou in the 14th meeting all-time between the two schools.

The Mustangs hold an 8-5 overall series lead, but the Bears have won four of the past five meetings. Four of those five meetings have also been decided by one goal.

🔺 The Legend Returns. Of course we’re excited about another opportunity to get back on the field at McLane.

But what’s even better? When the legend himself returns.

That’s right, when the Bears host nationally-ranked Utah this weekend, RGIII himself will be back in the building.

🔺 Forever Impact. Sure, we love providing updates on winning games, take home awards and much more.

But this is the best update we can every provide. What a special time to have so many of the men’s basketball crew be on hand to watch Langston Love and Jayden Nunn get baptized.

Congrats gentlemen!

🎙 BACK ON THE MIC

Baylor Football 🤝 Baylor Futbol

With both squads in action at home this weekend, no better time to bring Coach Aranda and Coach Lenard together on the weekly Baylor Coach’s Show LIVE at Rudy’s TONIGHT!

The action gets underway at 7, but get there early and enjoy some good eats before hearing all the inside information.

📝 ICYMI

🔺 Profile For The Hall. In early November, seven former Bears will descend upon Waco and be enshrined into the Baylor Athletic Hall of Fame.

These seven former Bears were instrumental parts of their programs and ambassadors both on the field, in the classroom and after graduating from Baylor.

Over the coming weeks, our own Baylor Insider, Jerry Hill, will take a deeper look into each one of their stories.

First up, J.D. Walton, the All-American center who went on to a six-year NFL career with the Denver Broncos, and is now back coaching high school football right here in Texas.

🤔 SIC ’EM TRIVIA

Connect Four. As we mentioned above, Manuela Bibinbe introduced herself in emphatic fashion to the BU faithful last week in the home-opening win over Rice.

Her efforts earned her Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors. Including in those efforts was something that hadn’t been done since 2021 as she tallied four solo blocks in the win.

Who was the last Bear to tally four solo blocks in a match?
