Baylor Brew 7/25: Welcome Aboard

Get your Daily Dose of the Bears Each and Every Morning

🐻 The Official Daily Newsletter For Baylor Athletics

Good Tuesday morning Bears fans. We haven’t even poured our first cup of coffee and we already have a case of the jitters. It feels like the first day of school all over again, except for the endless pictures and sign holding that Mom makes us do.

Let us introduce ourselves. We’re the Baylor Brew - the first and only daily email about all things Baylor Bears.

Every morning we’ll be coming straight to your inbox talking about what you care about: the Bears. If you’d like to unsubscribe from this little added flavor to your morning, you can easily do so at the bottom of this email.

And don’t worry, if you unsubscribe, we’d certainly be sad to see you go and would miss you… but it won’t affect anything else related to your Baylor Athletics account like important news, team-specific notifications, or ticket sale announcements.

So, without further ado, why don’t you check out what it’s in today’s Brew?

🔺 Happy Houston Day! Bet you didn’t know that was a thing (it really is, look it up), but what better way to celebrate than to join us in Houston THIS WEEK!

Get an inside look at the Bears Football program and join Baylor family to hear John Morris, the Voice of the Bears, discuss the upcoming season with Baylor Football Head Coach Dave Aranda.

Baylor Alumni and the Touchdown Club of Houston present this special opportunity to hear how the program is building a culture of excellence that includes a commitment to the physical, social, and spiritual development of players. Registration for the event includes dinner.

The event will take place at the Omni Houston Hotel on Thursday night from 7-9 pm.

🔺 Youth Of A Nation. This November, incoming Baylor men’s tennis star Devin Badenhorst will be taking on the world for the second time in his young career.

Badenhorst will compete for South Africa in the prestigious event, including Philip Henning, Leo Matthysen and Dylan Salton. Badenhorst is the youngest South African team member and is making his second appearance in the Davis Cup, also participating in Feb. of 2022.

South Africa has won the Davis Cup once in its history, in 1974 and has been participating in the event since 1913.

The Davis Cup Africa Group III will begin on Aug. 23 in Pretoria and will feature Algeria, Benin, Namibia, Senegal, Togo, Ivory Coast, South Africa and Zimbabwe. It will feature two round-robin groups of four, with three teams promoted.

🔼 Setting the Stage. With four new faces in the Big 12, things will be a little different.

We’ll see some new faces in Waco and we’ll make some new road trips.

Those dance partners were announced last week by the Big 12 with the schedule pairings for 2023-24 being released.

🔺 Tip Of The Cap. A quartet of Bears have earned a tip of the cap as they were selected as Student-Athlete Center for Excellence (SACE) July Champions of the Month.

This award recognizes student-athletes who achieve their personal bests in the areas of academic achievement, athletic success, character formation and spiritual growth.

Sarah Andrews (women's basketball), Kourtney Kennard (track & field), Jack Stone (football) and Drew Wrightson (men's golf) were all honored.

Each of these student-athletes was nominated by a SACE team member based upon their embodiment of each of the four pillars.

🔺 Bears In the Garden. A matchup that so many around the country will be tuned into is set.

Time and network will be determined at a later date, but December's matchup will be the second-ever between the two schools and the first since a 78-71 Duke win in the Elite Eight on March 28, 2010.

The Bears and the Blue Devils are the only two programs in the country to feature three-straight top-20 picks in the NBA Draft, and head coach Scott Drew is looking forward to a battle in the Big Apple in December.

Baylor will be making its seventh appearance at Madison Square Garden and its first since 2017.

The full non-conference schedule will be announced in the coming months, but the Bears have previously announced another trip to the Big Apple as part of the NIT Season Tip-off Nov. 22-24 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

⏱ BEAR (COUNT)DOWN

23 Days. That’s right folks.

We are just 23 days away from the start of the 2023-2024 Baylor athletic calendar. The Baylor women’s squad kicks things off (literally) when they travel to Oregon to take on the Ducks on August 17th at 9 pm CST.

Two weeks later, the soccer, volleyball and football teams are ALL in action at home. Block off that weekend and make sure you’ve got the Green and Gold ready!

The Bears are coming.

🏈 KICKOFF DRAWS NEAR

Bears On The Prowl. With hundreds of microphones, media from all across the region and nation, Coach Aranda and the fellas stepped to the podium recently at Big 12 Media Days. They, once again, reminded us just how grateful we are to have these guys in Green & Gold.

Here’s a little bit of recap from the busy day in Arlington.

🤔 SIC ’EM TRIVIA

Last Time… Last week, it was announced that the Bears would return to Madison Square Garden for the seventh time in program history and face off against Duke in a highly anticipated matchup of two of the best programs in the country.

The trip to the Mecca of Basketball will be the first trip for the Bears since 2017.

That 2017 matchup was an East Region Semifinal showdown against South Carolina.

Do you know who the leading scorer in that game was for Baylor?

Think you’ve got it?
